Your writing really matters

Do you wonder if there is any point in writing things down? Perhaps you think keeping a diary is a waste of time, of you have heard about the benefits of journaling but you think it’s pointless. Well, let me see if I can change your mind.

I’m not going to talk about journaling, because I have talked about the mental and physical benefits of journaling many times before, a quick search and you can read my thoughts on the amazing reasons you should be journaling or writing something every day. Today though I am going to share another perspective on why I believe writing matters.

This weekend I had a wonderful word filled time. I went to see an incredible one woman performance of Little Women at York Theatre Royal. Little Women is perhaps my favourite book, and it has been since I first read it in my early twenties. This performance was a cleverly written retelling, it featured Jo March (the main character) retelling the story as though she were writing it to create the book. It made me think about how many people have been touched by this classic, which was inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s own childhood. Had she not taken the time to write her story, generations of people would have missed out on the joy of sharing those experiences with her. More than that though, my Mum left the theatre feeling inspired. She herself has four sisters and a brother, so she could easily…
